The Colombo District Court has prolonged the injunction against former President Maithripala Sirisena, preventing him from serving as the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party until May 9th.
This extension follows a plea by former President Chandrika Bandaranaike, who seeks a permanent injunction to oust Sirisena from the party leadership, citing his inadequacy for the role.
During the recent court session on April 4th, Bandaranaike's legal representatives underscored that Sirisena's continued tenure violates the party's constitution. They argued that while he is eligible to hold the chairman position during his elected term, upon the conclusion of his presidency, he should assume the role of patron, as outlined in the party's governing document. The lawyers contend that Sirisena concurrently holding both positions is contrary to the party's constitutional framework.
