The Sri Lankan government has set its sights on transforming the Hingurakgoda Domestic Airport into a vibrant international hub, marking a significant step towards boosting economic growth and connectivity in the region.Originally established as RAF Minneriya during World War II, the airport holds historical significance as a strategic base for the Royal Air Force of England.
Now, the government is investing in revitalizing this historic airfield into a modern aviation center.According to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Aviation, the 2024 budget has earmarked a substantial sum of 2 billion rupees for the initial phase of construction and development at Hingurakgoda Airport.
The primary focus of this phase will be to extend the existing runway, currently measuring 2287 meters in length and 46 meters in width, to a total length of 2500 meters.By expanding the runway, the airport aims to accommodate larger aircraft such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing B737 models, facilitating increased air traffic and passenger capacity.
The comprehensive modernization project is projected to require a total investment of 17 billion rupees.Once completed, the transformation of Hingurakgoda Airport into an international hub is expected to significantly enhance Sri Lanka's air transport infrastructure, fostering greater connectivity and economic opportunities for the region.
