Amidst ongoing talks of electoral alliances, a group of MPs from Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) advocate for a General Election prior to the scheduled Presidential ballot, informed political sources said.

However, according to the sources close to the President, the latter remains committed to the Presidential Election, while SLPP withholds endorsement pending assessment.

Internal divisions widen as some MPs publicly support the President, prompting speculation on political motives.

The Presidential election is scheduled to be held between September and October.
