Conflicts arose between some election officials and Grama Niladharis at polling stations during the Presidentilal Election 2024, allegedly when alcohol and snacks were not provided, the Sri Lanka Grama Niladhari Officers’ Association claimed, sending a letter to the Election Commission (EC).

In the letter, the Grama Niladharis requested that the Election Commission issue clear guidelines and recommendations to polling station officials and staff to prevent such incidents.

The association claimed that some polling station officials caused disruptions for Grama Niladhari officers who did not supply alcohol and snacks.

They further reported that these situations created significant difficulties, specially for female Grama Niladhari officers who forced to address tensions at polling stations due to the matter.
