The Supreme Court today (30) dismissed four petitions seeking a ruling on the alleged violation of fundamental human rights stemming from the government’s recent decision to reduce the interest paid on Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) investments in treasury bills and bonds to 9% as part of the domestic debt restructuring process.
The four petitions, filed by various parties, including the Katunayake Free Trade Zone Workers’ Union, were presented before a three-member Supreme Court bench consisting of Justices Preethi Padman Surasena, Kumudini Wickremesinghe, and Achala Wengappuli.
The court issued this order today (30) after accepting preliminary objections raised by several parties, including the Attorney General, asserting that the relevant petitions could not be maintained since earlier Fundamental Rights petitions related to the same matter had already been dismissed without consideration.
