NPP General Secretary Tilvin Silva has accused Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardane of violating the Constitution in the appointment of Deshabandu Tennakoon as the Inspector General of Police (IGP). Silva stated that they plan to take the matter to the Supreme Court.

Speaking at a news conference, Silva claimed that the Speaker had consented to Tennakoon's appointment despite the Constitutional Council's decision being conveyed to the President. According to Silva, the Speaker's actions were in violation of the Constitution, as he can only vote in the event of a tie. Silva also noted that the Speaker did not vote during the Constitutional Council meeting.
