The Sectoral Oversight Committee on Alleviating the Impact of the Economic Crisis has taken a decisive step, demanding a report from the Central Bank within one week regarding the legality of the salary hike.
During a recent committee meeting, Chairman MP Gamini Waleboda highlighted concerns surrounding the unprecedented salary increment and raised questions about the absence of parliamentary approval for such a substantial raise.
Central Bank officials were present at the meeting, where they were urged to provide clarity on the legal basis for the salary adjustment. MP Waleboda emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the Central Bank has been given a deadline of one week to furnish a comprehensive report justifying the salary increase. He reiterated the committee's stance that the salary hike, particularly amidst the ongoing economic crisis, was viewed as ethically questionable.
"We instructed the Central Bank to provide a report by next week to justify the salary increase. They will need to provide the legal provisions that empower them to effect such an increment. We will summon the Central Bank and its Monetary Board after receiving the report," stated MP Waleboda.
