Galle Chief Magistrate Isuru Netthikumara today ordered the release of Krishantha Perera, a Consultant Oncologist at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital. The doctor had been remanded in connection with an alleged assault on a junior staff member and a female employee of Karapitiya Hospital.
Krishantha Perera, who was under the protection of prison officers at Karapitiya Hospital, arrived at the court in an ambulance accompanied by two nurses and a doctor.
During the court proceedings, both parties, representing the accused doctor and the victims, expressed their willingness to settle the matter amicably. In light of this, the magistrate decided to refer charges other than the one related to obstructing duty to a mediation committee.
The Chief Magistrate granted bail to the suspected doctor on two sureties of one million rupees each. While allowing his release, Magistrate Netthikumara issued a warning to Dr. Krishantha Perera, advising him not to interfere with activities carried out under the privileges of trade unions.
In an interesting observation, the magistrate acknowledged the right to strike as belonging to both doctors and menial workers, emphasizing that it is a fundamental right within their respective domains.
