Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa raised concerns in Parliament today over the allocation of Rs.250 million for dispatching a naval vessel to participate in operations against the Houthis in the Red Sea. Premadasa questioned the expenditure, emphasizing the economic challenges facing Sri Lanka, including widespread unemployment and the struggles of small and micro-scale industrialists.
During the parliamentary session, Premadasa sought clarification from the government, asking, "What benefit does Sri Lanka stand to gain from spending such a large amount of money, especially at a juncture when unemployment is rife throughout the country and small and micro-scale industrialists have all been subject to peril?"
The Opposition Leader's query ignited a heated debate on the floor, with members of the government defending the decision, citing national security concerns and international commitments. Meanwhile, opposition members echoed Premadasa's sentiments, emphasizing the need for prudent fiscal management and prioritizing domestic issues, particularly in the context of the economic challenges.
