Anura Dissanayake, the leader of the National People's Power (NPP), engaged with people's representatives protesting against illegal limestone mining in Ponnaveli village, located in the Kilinochchi district. The meeting aimed to discuss the ongoing challenges and potential measures to address the problematic situation arising from the mining activities.
Residents from five villages, including Ponnaveli, have been steadfastly involved in a continuous protest campaign spanning over 150 days. The protest is a response to what the residents claim is illegal limestone mining in the region, posing environmental and livelihood threats.
Anura Dissanayake took the opportunity to listen to the concerns and grievances of the people's representatives leading the protest. The residents, deeply affected by the mining operations, appealed for support and urged Dissanayake to take necessary measures to address the issues at hand.
The protest campaign has gained momentum as residents voice their opposition to the alleged illegal mining activities, emphasizing the adverse impact on the local environment and the livelihoods of the communities in the affected villages.
