Tragedy struck Matara Prison as an inmate, convicted of murder on August 30, succumbed to a mysterious illness suspected to be brain fever. Prisons Commissioner and Media Spokesman, Gamini B. Dissanayake, confirmed the unfortunate incident, reporting that the inmate passed away on Friday, December 22.
The deceased inmate had been under medical observation for symptoms related to the suspected illness. The Prisons Department is working diligently to ascertain the exact cause of death through a thorough investigation. Concerns have been raised as eight other inmates, currently receiving medical attention, are reportedly exhibiting similar symptoms.
