Patali Champika Ranawaka, leader of the United Republic Front and Member of Parliament, asserted today that it is feasible to boost the country's income by 50 percent without imposing additional taxes on the public. Speaking at a party meeting in Kamburupitiya, Ranawaka addressed the issue of untaxed wealth among the affluent class, emphasizing the need for a transparent mechanism to uncover their incomes.
Ranawaka pointed out that a segment of society enjoys a lavish lifestyle without contributing their fair share in taxes, and the government hesitates to scrutinize this elite class's earnings. He underscored the disparity where a doctor's salary is taxed, but the income of certain capitalists remains undisclosed.
Highlighting the discrepancy in reporting income and expenses, Ranawaka proposed that by implementing an effective mechanism to reveal the true earnings of this affluent class, the necessity for imposing new taxes could be obviated. He argued that a substantial number of individuals engaged in smuggling operations thrive without paying taxes, contributing to the fiscal deficit.
The parliamentarian estimated that there are approximately 2,500 individuals in the country who willingly pay taxes exceeding 5 crore rupees. However, he noted that an equal number manage to evade detection, emphasizing the need for a system to accurately report their actual incomes, a task he believes can be accomplished within a month.
Ranawaka further elaborated on the government's approach to generate revenue, expressing concern about a proposed 30,000 rupees VAT applicable to all citizens, irrespective of age. He questioned the feasibility of such a tax, especially for those experiencing a decline in income.
