The Department of Census and Statistics reports a notable decrease in Sri Lanka's annual birth rate, particularly between 2019 and 2022.
Data reveals a continuous decline since 2014, with a significant drop of 6,401 registered births between 2023 and 2022.
As of July 1, 2023, 268,920 births have been reported, compared to 275,321 in 2022 and over 300,000 in 2020.
Analysts attribute this decline to various factors, including social and economic constraints, birth control plans, family planning, and the impact of global pandemics.
