In a new development of the story of a Sri Lankan being arrested on espionage charges, India’s Central Bureau of Investigation has sought permission from a court on Tuesday to interrogate the alleged spy Arun Selvarajan, to question him about his possible links with the LTTE.

The Multi Disciplinary Monitoring Agency, a specialised wing of CBI, filed the petition at the special court in Poonamallee.

Selvaranjan was recently arrested in Chennai by the National Investigating Agency of India alleging he had collected sensitive information on several places in south India and passed them on to Pakistan’s ISI officials. Selvarajan was residing in Saligramam, Chennai, and was running an event management company in the city.

While the NIA is investigating the case, the CBI has sought to question him on possible links with the LTTE.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Selvarajan was produced in the special court at Poonamallee amidst tight police security when a petition was filed by the NIA seeking Selvarajan’s custody to interrogate him. When the judge asked Selvarajan if he is willing to be taken into custody by the NIA for interrogation, he responded in the affirmative.

The court reserved orders on the NIA’s petition and it is expected that the order will be pronounced today.
