SLFP General Secretary Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera said he did not have a lot of expectations about the budget given the current situation in the country.
Speaking to the media after an event in Kurunegala, Jayasekera said the government was not in a positon to provide relief to the people.
He said he did not think the people would get much relief from the forthcoming budget.
He said it was a fallacy to say that relief would be provided through budgets and that no one should expect relief from a budget.
He said the budget was a plan to deal with the situation of the year, but unfortunately the people of Sri Lanka were accustomed to thinking that the budget would increase salaries and provide relief.
"People think the budget is like Santa Claus coming in for Christmas and it's completely wrong," he said. He said that such a catastrophe has befallen the country today due to that misunderstanding. Therefore, the budget is a mirror that shows the future of the country and the economic program for the coming year, he said, adding that some concessions as well as tax increases could be made there.
