President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has rejected a request made by 11 constituent parties in the government to negotiate an agreement with an American company regarding the Yugadanavi power plant.
The written request was made by the Democratic Left Front, Lanka Sama Samaja Party, Jathika Nidahas Peramuna, Pivithuru Hela Urumaya, Ape Jana Bala Party, Sri Lanka Freedom Party, the National Congress, Eksath Mahajana Party, the Communist Party of Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka Mahajana Party and the Yuthukama National Organization.
The letter called on the President to reconsider the agreement to hand over 40% of the Yugadanavi power plant to an American company and to implement the agreement under a proper tender procedure after a formal study.
The letter also pointed out that the monopoly of one company to generate electricity from gas through the agreement is a danger to the sovereignty of the country.
However, President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has responded in writing to the representatives of those political parties
It said it would be more appropriate to discuss the issue at a cabinet or government group meeting.
