Former Speaker and Chairman of the National Movement for Social Justice, Karu Jayasuriya says a nationwide consultation should be conducted before the proposed new constitution is implemented in Sri Lanka.
'The President announced a new constituition will be presented next year. First, nationwide consultations should start before some politically 'chosen experts' come up with a draft' he tweeted.
The President, at the 72nd anniversary of the Sri Lanka Army a few days ago, said the new constitution proposed pre-pandemic would be implemented 'as promised.'
While calling for nationwide consultations before any such constitution is passed, Jayasuriya said however that a new constitution would be a chance to get rid of the 'draconian 20th Amendment' that the Rajapaksa regime brought in in 2019.
