FR Petition Against Cabinet Memorandum On Possession Of Elephants: SC Sets Date For Consideration Of Petition

The Supreme Court has set a date for consideration of the Fundamental Rights Petition filed against the Cabinet Memorandum on the withdrawal of cases pertaining to the possession of elephants without permits and the handing over of the elephants to their original owners.

When the petition was called before a panel of judges comprising Buwaneka Aluvihare, Achala Wengappuli and Arjuna Obeysekera, the court ordered that the petition be called on the 12th of October.

The State Counsel appearing for the Attorney General informed the court that the respondents had filed objections to the petition and after studying the objections, a date has been fixed for consideration of the petition.

The petition was filed by a group including the Environmental Justice Center (CJC) seeking a ruling that fundamental human rights were being violated in the case and a ruling that the relevant cabinet paper was illegal.
