President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has directed the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption to conduct an immediate investigation into the revelations made about Sri Lankans in 'Pandora Papers'.

Two Sri Lankans, namely former Deputy Minister Nirupama Rajapaksa and her husband Thiru Nadesan, have been mentioned in 'Pandora Papers' - a leak of almost 12 million documents that revealed hidden wealth, tax avoidance and, in some cases, money laundering - obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).

Nirupama Rajapaksa is a close relative of President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

President Rajapaksa's spokesman Kingsley Ratnaike announced today that the President has instructed the Bribery Commission to provide him with a report in a month.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has called for Parliamentary Select Committee to investigate the revelations made in Pandora Papers. Premadasa broke his silence over the matter by issuing a statement last evening.

Opposition MP Dr. Harsha De Silva said the SJB's lawyers would also submit documents to the Bribery Commission for separate investigation.

"We will push for a transparent and independent probe into this," the MP said.
