Janaka Bandara Tennakoon, Minister of Public Services, Provincial Councils and Local Government stated in Parliament today that he personally does not believe that there is a conducive environment for holding the Provincial Council elections in the country.
"Therefore, we hope to take a decision in this regard in the future," he said.
He was responding to a question raised by SJB Anuradhapura District MP Rohana Bandara.
Bandara asked the Minister whether the Provincial Council election would be held first or the Local Government election.
He further questioned the manner in which the elections would be held.
The governent has already appointed a high-powered parliamentary committee, chaired by Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, to look into the electoral reforms. It is learnt that the Provincial Council election has been postponed indefinitely until the finalization of these reforms.
