The report of the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) investigation into the oil slick floating in Diyawanna Oya last week has been handed over to Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.
Investigations were carried out after taking samples of oily water floating in the Diyawanna Oya in the area near the Buthgamuwa Bridge in Rajagiriya.
According to the report, this situation has been caused by the growth of algae and bacteria due to the discharge of sewage into a canal in the Buthgamuwa area connected to the Diyawanna Oya for some time and the non-discharge of water in that canal.
Therefore, the investigation team has presented three recommendations to conserve water in this area, which includes preventing the residents from discharging untreated and polluted water into the Diyawanna and removing the silt from the bottom of the Buthgamuwa canal at least once a year
