Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka Ajith Nivard Cabraal said that a decision will be taken in December to re-allow the importation of vehicles.
The Sri Lankan government imposed restrictions on the importation of vehicles due to the looming foreign exchange crisis in the country.
The decision has severely inconvenienced the middle class as it led to a steep increase in the prices of vehicles in the country.
Cabral also stated that the importation of vehicles is problematic at the moment as foreign exchange has to be protected. However, many analysts have expressed doubts about whether the government will re-allow the importation of vehicles at the end of this year.
The Governor of the Central Bank further stated that there was no intention to allow the importation of vehicles until the recovery of the tourism industry.
