Government In Fresh Turmoil Over Transfer Of 'Yugadanavi' Shares To US Company: Govt Allies Seek Meeting With President

A serious political dispute has arisen between government parties over the transfer of shares in the Kerawalapitiya Yugadanavi power plant to an American company.

Ten government allies have publicly protested against the government. The government's allies, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, the Jathika Nidahas Peramuna, the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya, the Democratic Left Front, the Lanka Sama Samaja Party, the Communist Party of Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Mahajana Party and many other parties have protested against the agreement.

It is learnt that the leaders of ten government-allied parties have sent a three page letter to President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa requesting an immediate discussion on this matter. According to political sources, the letter requested that the agreement be reconsidered. It is learned that the letter also informed that the transfer of the gas distribution monopoly to one company through this agreement was a serious matter.

Athuraliye Rathana Thero, Leader of our People's Party, Maithripala Sirisena, former President and the Leader of Sri Lanka Freedom Party, Wimal Weerawansa, Leader of the National Freedom Front, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Leader of the Democratic Left Front, Udaya Gammanpila, Leader of the Pure Hela Urumaya, Prof. Tissa Vitarana, Leader of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party It is reported that this letter has been signed by the General Secretary of the party Dr. G. Weerasinghe, Tiran Alles, Gevindu Kumaratunga and Asanka Navaratne.

The group also held discussions with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa at Temple Trees last Thursday, but that discussion also failed.
