The Police Special Investigations Unit at the Ministry of Sports has abandoned investigations into the allegations made by Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage that the final match of the ICC World Cup in 2011 was fixed.
Aluthgamage made these allegations in the run up to the last parliamentary election after several senior cricketers raised concerns over the government's plans to construct a new cricket stadium in the country.
The Police Unit recorded statements several senior cricketers including Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardena, Upul Tharang and former Selections Committee Chairman Aravinda De Silva regarding the statement.
After initial investigations, the Attorney General has concluded that there was no basis to continue the investigation as the Minister's allegations appeared to be baseless.
Accordingly, the Police Unit has abandoned the investigation.
