Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has written a letter to President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa seeking to secure a pardon for former MP Ranjan Ramanayake.

Ramanayake is currently serving a 4-year Rigorous Imprisonment for contempt of court.

In her letter, Kumaratunga said Ramanayake was a man who always committed to the well-being of the public and even sacrificed his personal wealth for the poor.

Kumaratunga also reminded the President that those who were convicted for more serious offences were granted presdiential pardon by Rajapaksa.

Ramanayaka is the nephew of the former President's late husband, Wijaya Kumaratunga.
