SLPP MP Jagath Kumara said State Minister Ajith Nivard Cabral would sacrifice his ministerial position to become the Governor of the Central Bank.

"The post of State Minister is higher than the Governorship at the Central Bank. But, Cabral will make this sacrifice for the country," he said addressing a press conference.

The MP added that Cabral opted to take the top post at the Central Bank after considering a request from the President.

A number of institutions that came under the purview of Cabral have been handed over to Minister Namal Rajapaksa who recently received an additional Cabinet portfolio.

When asked as who will replace Cabral as a national list MP, Kumara said the party was yet to make a decision on the matter.
