Former President Maithripala Sirisena is expected to deliver a special statement this evening.
This comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions between the Sri Lanka Podujana Party and the SLFP, the main constituent party of the government.
A section of SLFP MPs are of the view that the party should break away from the government and function as an independent group in Parliament.
The party, however, is yet to make a final decision on the matter. The party is also considering the idea of forming a new alliance with minor constituent parties of the government.
Sirisena recently made a statement sharing his views on the plan to construct a jogging track alongside the Pararama Samudraya, an ancient tank in Polonnaruwa.
