The government has launched an investigation into a statement by Sri Lanka Standards Institute (SLSI) Director-General Siddhika Senaratne on the food items containing cancerous elements.

Speaking to a TV channel, Senaratne said there were many food items in the market with cancerous elements but the SLSI did not want to take immediate action on them as it would lead to the collapse of some major companies.

This statement sparked a major controversy on social media with many questioning the conduct of the SLSI.

However, speaking to the media yesterday, Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said the government would conduct an investigation into Senaratne's statement as it was a "highly questionable" remark.

The Media Minister said the government was committed to ensuring the safety of the well-being of the public and would not in any way jeopardize the public health.
