The Director-General of Customs Major General (retd) G.S. V. Ravipriya said the consignment of imported coconut oil allegedly containing harmful substances would not be released for the consumption of the public.

Addressing a press conference, Ravipriya said the containers were released into the warehouses of the importing companies as it would take several days to check whether the coconut oil contained the aphrodisiac chemicals.

The Customs chiel also said that his department was informed on the 4th of this month that the coconut oil imported by the two companies contained the chemical aflatoxin and that the two companies were instructed to immediately re-export the consignment.

The Director-General told the media previously that any complaint with regard to the substandard coconut oil should be referred to the Sri Lanka Standards Institute (SLSI).
