The President has sent his recommendations to the Parliamentary Council to appoint six new judges to the Supreme Court.
The number of judges in the Supreme Court have been increased in accordance with the 20th Amendment to the Constitution.
Accordingly, the names of present Chairman of the Court of Appeal, HMDA Navas and Judges of the Court of Appeal Shiran Gunaratne, Kumuduni Wickramasinghe, Janak de Silva, Achala Wengappuli and Mahinda Samayawardena have been sent to the Parliamentary Council.
The President has made this selection on the recommendation of the Chief Justice in the order of seniority of the judges currently in the Court of Appeal.
It is learned that with the appointment of these Senior Judges to the Supreme Court, a Senior Judge of the Judicial Service of the Court of Appeal will be appointed to fill the vacancy.
