The Ministry of Education has taken steps to transform the Gampaha Wickramaarachchi Ayurvedic Institute into a National University.

Accordingly, a special gazette notification was issued on the instructions of the Minister of Education, Prof. GL Peiris, making this institution, which was previously affiliated to the University of Kelaniya, a National University.

It is the 16th National University of Sri Lanka and is named as "Gampaha Wickramaarachchi Indigenous Medical University". It will be governed by a Vice Chancellor and will have four faculties.
