A third year student of the Department of Decision Sciences (DSC), Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce has been tested positive for COVID-19, the University Administration announced.
"The university has taken measures to conduct PCR tests on the student and have admitted her to IDH. PCR test reports of the student’s mother who is reportedly a nurse at the Base Hospital Panadura, have not yet been received by the University."
"We are unaware as to how COVID-19 has been contracted by the student. Investigations are ongoing. There have been two other students with the DSC student in the same boarding and one student (3rd year) is from the same Department. One of the students at the Boarding house is from the Gampaha District. We are awaiting the results of their PCR tests. The Ministry of Health have been informed regarding the matter.
The university has placed the students at the same boarding house and the students remaining at Hostel from the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce under quarantine.
The University has moved coursework online since the 06th of October 2020 and students are discouraged from unnecessarily entering the university as the heavy load of the work is done through LMS. External and postgraduate courses taking place during the weekends have also moved online.
While many students have vacated the University hostels since the 06th of October 2020, the University is currently accommodating around 200 students that have remained at the University Hostels. The few students from the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce remaining within the University have been quarantined at the Hostels with accordance to the COVID-19 quarantine guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health.
Further decisions with regard to the reported positive case in the University will be arrived after getting the PCR test reports of the mother of the student and the students’ of the mentioned boarding house.
The University of Sri Jayewardenepura strictly follows the COVID-19 guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health and will continue to do so in order to ensure the safety of its students and staff, the university said.
