Former Speaker Says Only A Supreme Court Interpretation Will Resolve Issues Around New Election Date: Reiterates He Will Not Convene Parliament Unilaterally

Former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has said at the Constitutional Council meeting that only the Supreme Court could give an interpretation to the questions relating to the new election date.

Jayasuriya had maintained that he was not ready to trigger a constitutional crisis in the midst of a pandemic by unilaterally reconvening Parliament.

The former Speaker said he was ready to abide by any interpretation given by the Supreme Court on the current issues.

Several council members had pointed out that the President should work with all party leaders to ensure more clarity.

It is, however, still not clear whether the President will seek the opinion of the Supreme Court on the new election date and the constitutional issus surrounding it.
