Chief of Defence Staff Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne will retire from service today.

Prior to his appointment as the Chief of Defence Staff, Wijegunaratne served as the Commander of Navy.

During his tenure as the CDS, Wijegunaratne found himself at the centre of a major controversy over the abductions and disappearances of 11 youth.

Wijegunaratne was arrested by the CID while still in military service.
