Sinopec, a global leader in the energy sector, has achieved another significant milestone in Sri Lanka by co-launching the Energy Talent Growth Program in Colombo and Beijing. This innovative training initiative is aimed at shaping the future of Sri Lanka’s energy workforce, reflecting Sinopec’s dedication to fostering collaboration, leveraging global expertise, and strengthening ties between the two nations.
The Energy Talent Growth Program represents a unique model of partnership, combining Sinopec’s global expertise with the knowledge of local stakeholders to create transformative opportunities for Sri Lanka’s energy sector. The inaugural cohort consists of 18 high-performing station managers and staff from 150 franchised fuel stations across the country. These participants are currently undergoing a 10-day immersive training experience in China, where they are learning firsthand about Sinopec’s advanced operational standards, innovative safety protocols, and strategic vision.
The program is structured in two phases. The first phase, held in Colombo, provided foundational training in filling station operations and Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) standards. The second phase, taking place in Beijing, offers dynamic, hands-on training led by Sinopec’s expert teams. The curriculum combines theoretical studies with practical applications through lectures and visits to key Sinopec sites, culminating in a rigorous skills examination to assess participants' understanding of Sinopec’s global operations and corporate culture.
His Excellency Majintha Jayesinghe, Sri Lankan Ambassador to China, emphasized the importance of the program, stating, “These initiatives demonstrate Sinopec’s commitment to uplifting Sri Lankan professionals and fostering deeper ties between our nations. This program is about more than skill enhancement; it’s about building enduring relationships that bridge cultures.”
Mr. Hao Jian, Sinopec’s Representative in Sri Lanka, highlighted the program’s collaborative vision, saying, “Our mission is to equip Sri Lanka’s workforce with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in the global energy landscape. This initiative embodies our commitment to sustainable progress, not only for the energy sector but also for the communities we serve. It also reflects the strength of the partnership between our two nations.”
Beyond training, Sinopec has committed to improving Sri Lanka’s energy infrastructure. Over the past seven months, the company has ensured smooth operations across all 150 franchised filling stations, while also undertaking renovations, safety upgrades, and service improvements. These efforts underscore Sinopec’s long-term vision for revitalizing the nation’s energy sector and enhancing the services it provides to customers and stakeholders.
Mr. Tang Yandi, China’s Economic and Commercial Counselor to Sri Lanka, praised Sinopec’s contributions, stating, “This program exemplifies the power of collaboration. By combining technical expertise with cultural understanding, Sinopec is fostering a resilient and skilled workforce, ready to meet the challenges of a dynamic energy sector.”
Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Energy also reinforced this perspective. Mr. Aruna Athukorala, Director of Planning, noted, “Sinopec has gone beyond its operational role to uplift the energy sector through meaningful partnerships and skill-building initiatives. This program reflects their unwavering commitment to Sri Lanka’s progress.”
Ms. Dimuthu Chandrasiri, Director of Training at the Ministry of Education, highlighted the importance of vocational education for national development, stating, “This initiative demonstrates the power of industry-government partnerships. Sinopec’s focus on skill-building aligns with the government’s efforts to enhance human capital and bridge skill gaps in key industries.”
Looking ahead, the Energy Talent Growth Program aims to expand throughout Sri Lanka, ensuring that every station manager receives world-class training. By integrating technical development with cultural exchange, Sinopec is nurturing a forward-thinking workforce, ready to tackle the challenges of the global energy industry.
Through these efforts, Sinopec has solidified its role as a transformative partner in Sri Lanka’s energy sector, driving innovation, demonstrating resilience, and promoting sustainable growth in line with the country’s energy sector aspirations.
