JVP Politburo member Wasantha Samarasinghe said the removal of Ranil Wickremesinghe would not rejuvenate the UNP.

Addressing a gathering in Anuradhapura, the former JVP MP said the UNP's future was "highly uncertain."

"No matter who becomes the party leader, the UNP will still be fighting its own battles," he added.

"Wickremesinghe said he knew beforehand that Premadasa would lose the election. Then why did we have an election in the first place? We could have handed over the presidency to the winning candidate without a contest," Samarasinghe added.

However, the JVP too ended up with dismal results at the Presidential election with only 3% of the voting population endorsing JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
