UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has tasked the legal committee of the party to submit a report on party reforms after studying the wide-ranging powers of the party leader.

The UNP leader has overarching powers which include the appointment of decision-making bodies of the party, sub-organizations and the appointments of organizers and other officials.

Wickremesinghe previously appointed a committee to make recommendations on the future of party leadership.

Media reports said last week that the committee has recommended the appointment of Sajith Premadasa as the new leader of the party.

The party has already decided to nominate Premadasa as the Leader of the Opposition.
