Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya has informed President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa that he intended to resign from office.

The request, however, has not elicited a proper response so far.

Meanwhile, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya issued a statement confirming that Deshapriya had requested to retire from office.

However, Jayasuriya who also chairs the Constitutional Council said, he requested the Elections Commission Chairman to continue in the same position.

Issuing a statement, Jayasuriya said Deshapriya rendered an excellent service during the recently concluded Presidential election.
