Parliamentarian Vasudewa Nanayakkara's appointment as the Speaker of Parliament still hangs in the balance, informed political sources said.
It is learnt that several prominent leaders of the government have requested Speaker Karu Jayasuriya to continue in the position for the next 4 months.
The UNP-led alliance still commands the majority support in Parliament. President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has already indicated that he will dissolve Parliament on March 1, next year.
It is also reported that Jayasuriya has turned down multiple requests to take over the leadership of the United National Party.
