Former Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne has passed away at the age of 88.

Jayaratne, a seasoned politician, was one of the founding members of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP).

He was politically active until the last days of his life. He was seen actively supporting Gotabhaya Rajapaksa's campaign earlier this month.

He was hospitalized on Monday in critical condition.
