Ven. Inguruwatte Sumangala Thera launched a hunger strike at the Independence Square this morning demanding full disclosure of the status of SLPP candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa's citizenship.

Rajapaksa's citizenship came under a shadow of doubt last week with Minister Harin Fernando claiming that the latest US Federal Registry does not include Rajapaksa's name among those who renounced US citizenship by September 30, 2019.

Responding to Fernando's statement, Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa publicized a certificate confirming Rajapaksa's renunciation of citizenship.

The matter, however, has become highly controversial with various parties presenting contradictory and conflicting viewpoints.
