A senior cabinet minister of the government today (22) claimed that former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga is on a feverish mission to put Sri Lanka at a disadvantageous position just a few days ahead of the vote on the US resolution against Sri Lanka at the UNHRC.
The minister, who was also a powerful member of the CBK government, said the timing of her letter is directly linked to US resolution and UNHRC sessions.
Her efforts to build religious harmony in the country, the Minister said, is also aimed at painting a wrong picture about Sri Lanka in the eyes of the international community. "Incidents of violence against certain groups in Sri Lanka are isolated incidents that do not in anyway amount to systematic torture or violence. The former President is now latching on to the religious harmony slogan as it has become a hot topic among Sri Lanka's detractors in Geneva," the minister said.
Meanwhile, responding to the letter sent by the former President, Lalith Weeratunga, Secretary to the President stated, "“His Excellency the President notes that the many allegations made by you in this letter against the Government, the Police and Intelligence Services of this country, are lacking in even a shred of proof to justify such charges of a serious nature,
His Excellency wishes to convey that the Government is fully aware of the legal provisions under the Police Ordinance with regard to the prevention of crime, and therefore assures you that these provisions are and will be fully implemented against anyone found to be violating the provisions of the law.
In conclusion, His Excellency also observes that the timing of your letter, with an abundance of generalization, is intended to synchronize with the wholly unfair allegations against Sri Lanka being levelled by international forces in Geneva and elsewhere in the West today," the secretary said.
