Suspended IGP Pujith Jayasundara has been arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID),a short while ago.

The arrest has been made in relation to a 2017 incident where Jayasundara was seen assaulting and threatening a lift operator within the Police headquarters premises.

The victim has been identified as Samarakoon Banda, a minor Police officer.

The reason for the assault was the minor officer's failure to comply with a "mandatory" meditation session in the morning. Jayasundara made it compulsory was all police officers to meditate every morning before starting their duties.

Jayasundara was suspended by President Maithripala Sirisena over his failure to prevent the Easter Sunday attacks which claimed the lives of over 250 people.
