President Maithripala Sirisena has signed the extradition papers of former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran.
The documents, prepared by the Attorney General's Department, will now be submitted to the government of Singapore.
However, legal expert Dr. Prathibha mahanamahewa said it would take more than two yours to ensure the extraditon of former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran from Singapore.
Mahendra, a Singapore citizen, is currently evading the Sri Lankan law enforcement authorities over the bonds scam.
Dr. Mahanamahewa said the Singapore legal system lays strong emphasis on fundamental rights of the country's citizens.
He said the Singapore authorities would take a long time to examine the documents submitted by the Attorney General's Department of Sri Lanka.
President Maithripala Sirisena, addressing the 68th convention of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party in Colombo, said all necessary measures had been taken to seek the extradition of Mahendran.
