President Maithripala Sirisena said the current government deceoved Tamils in the North for four years by promising to abolish the Executive Presidency.
Addressing a function in Jaffna, Sirisena said the 19th Amendment to the Constitution has created a chaotic situation in the country as it has divided powers among the President, the Prime Minister and the Speaker.
"People in the South also hate the government as they think the government is striving to divide the country," he added.
"To save this country, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution should be abolished," he said.
Sirisena also added that no Prime Minister would be willing to abolish the 19th Amendment as it will curtail his or her own powers.
