Speculation is rife that Solicitor General and former Director General of the Bribery Commission Dilrukshi Dias Wickremasinghe will be the Presidential candidate of the UNP-led alliance with 'The Island' newspaper reporting that the senior prosecutor has resigned from her position to contest the Presidential election.
According to the newspaper report, Wickremasinghe has resigned from her position in the Attorney General's Department on August 20.
A crusader against corruption, Wickremasinghe resigned from her post as the Bribery Commission Director General in 2017 when President Maithripala Sirisena attempted to interfere with her investigations.
She has close ties with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe through family connections. She also maintains close ties with several front-line members of the United National Party.
However, Wickremasinghe is yet to officially confirm 'The Island' story.
