SLFP General Dayasiri Jayasekera said there was nothing left to negotiate with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) on forming a common alliance.
Jayasekera made this remark while speaking to a local newspaper after the SLPP announced former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa as the party's Presidential candidate.
"What can we do now? the SLPP has announced their candidate. I don't know whether there is anything else to be discussed," a frustrated General Secretary said.
The SLFP was pushing to form a common alliance with the SLPP and field President Maithripala Sirisena as the Presidential candidate of the alliance.
However, multiple sources added that President Sirisena would continue talks with SLPP Leader and Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa on working together at the next Presidential election.
The first discussion between the two held last week at the official residence of the President in Colombo.
It has now been revealed that Sirisena has indicated to Rajapaksa that he is ready to support the Presidential candidate of the SLPP.
