Former Navy Commander Wasantha Karannagoda has been promoted to the rank of Admiral of the Fleet and former Air Force Commander Roshan Gunathilaka to the rank of Marshal of the Air Force.
With this development, Karannagoda and Gunathilaka have been placed on the same level in the military hierarchy as Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka.
Alongside Fonseka, Karannagoda and Gunathilaka led the Navy and the Air Force during the final phase of the war against the LTTE.
Following their retirement, both Karannagoda and Gunathilake have aligned themselves with Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa's political campaign.
Karannagoda's name was linked to the abduction case of 11 Tamil youth which is currently being investigated by the CID.
