Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya said President Maithripala Sirisena assured to him that the term of the incumbent President would not be extended.

Earlier there were speculations that the President was preparing to seek the Supreme Court's opinion on whether he he could remain in office until May 2020.

However, in an media interview, Deshapriya has ruled out the possibility of Sirisena seeking such an opinion from the Supreme Court.

As a result, Deshapriya said, the Presidential election would take place without delay.

The Presidential election is expected to take place before December 08, 2019.
