Former Hambantota Mayor Eraj Ravindra Fernando and anther individual were sentenced to rigorous five-year imprisonment by the Hambantota High Court earlier today.

Fernando was convicted for brandishing a firearm wich he later claimed was a toy pistol.

Eraj Fernando, Premasiri Parnamana, Tuan Ramzan, Madusha Nilan and Bindu Sri Warnasinghe were charged on 29 counts over the incident. Only Fernando and Paraamanne were convicted by the Hambantota High Court.

The incident took place when a group of UNP MPs including Ajith P. Perera and Eran Wickremaratne undertook an observation tour to the Mattala International Airport in 2014.
